Background of the Study
As universities increasingly become more diverse, with students from various linguistic backgrounds, the ability to communicate effectively becomes essential for academic success. At Bayero University, Kano, many students come from regions with different native languages, which can pose significant barriers to understanding academic materials, participating in classroom discussions, and successfully completing coursework. To address this challenge, universities are increasingly looking toward automated translation systems powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to assist students who may not be fluent in the medium of instruction.

AI-based language translation systems, particularly those utilizing natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning, offer the potential to break down language barriers in real-time. These systems can translate not only basic text but also academic content, including scientific papers, lecture notes, and assignments, helping students access information in their preferred languages. Furthermore, AI systems can provide personalized translations that are context-sensitive, making them more accurate and reliable than traditional translation tools.

Bayero University, Kano, located in Gwale LGA, Kano State, serves a multilingual student body, and there is a need for an efficient and effective way to bridge the language gap. This study will investigate the implementation of an AI-based automated language translation system at Bayero University to enhance the learning experience of multilingual students.

Statement of the Problem
At Bayero University, Kano, students from diverse linguistic backgrounds face challenges in understanding academic content that is primarily delivered in English. Many students struggle to fully comprehend course materials, which affects their academic performance and overall experience. The university’s current support systems for language translation are limited and inadequate. There is a need for an AI-powered solution that can provide efficient and accurate translations for multilingual students to enhance their learning outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To design and develop an AI-based automated language translation system for Bayero University, Kano.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of the AI translation system in translating academic content for multilingual students.

3. To assess the impact of the translation system on the academic performance and satisfaction of multilingual students.

Research Questions

1. How effective is the AI-based language translation system in translating academic content for multilingual students?

2. What is the accuracy of the AI translation system compared to human translation services?

3. What impact does the AI-based translation system have on the academic performance and satisfaction of multilingual students?

Research Hypotheses

1. The AI-based language translation system will significantly improve the understanding of academic content among multilingual students.

2. The AI system will provide more efficient and accurate translations than current human translation services.

3. The use of AI-powered translation will improve the academic performance and satisfaction of multilingual students at Bayero University, Kano.

Significance of the Study
This study will highlight the potential of AI-based language translation systems in supporting multilingual students in higher education. By evaluating the system’s impact on academic success and student satisfaction, the research will assist Bayero University in providing better educational experiences for its diverse student population. The findings may also contribute to the broader field of AI applications in multilingual education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of an AI-based language translation system for Bayero University, Kano, located in Gwale LGA, Kano State. The research will evaluate the effectiveness of the system in translating academic content and its impact on student performance. Limitations include potential challenges in data collection and ensuring the system’s accuracy across multiple languages.
